Kundalini Yoga

“An artist takes great care of his tools, his brushes, his pencils – he selects his material, his wood, clay, paper, etc. with close consideration as to what will provide the most responsive medium for his talents. Yet the fundamental tool, the mind, is left wandering, undisciplined, and full of conflicting desires. The mind is largely an unknown factor in the process of creation. It is necessary to be able to tune the mind to the basic life forces within and without, and to be able to relax the mental processes so that the spontaneous creative impulses can come through clearly and honesty.

These exercises will prove useful if they are done regularly whenever you set yourself to be creative. Creative concentration on the practice of these exercise will open the channels through which your own inner creativity can flow.”

-From the practice - kriya for creativity - taught by Yogi Bhajan-

  • Kundalini Yoga is a technology designed specifically for this era - the Aquarian age.
It is often called the mother of yoga, as all forms of yoga have originated from it. For thousands of years, this practice was kept secret and passed down through oral tradition until Yogi Bhajan brought it to the West in 1969.

Kundalini represents the force of life energy and is often symbolized by a serpent.
It is a sexual, creative, and explosive energy that resides at the base of the spine. This energy is connected to a higher spiritual center and helps us grow, remain self-aware, and step into our power.

Kundalini Yoga is a somatic and holistic practice that works on the body, mind, and soul.

    • Somatic yoga postures focus on restoring the connection between body and mind. These techniques or therapies address and heal both physical and mental challenges by working through the body.

    • Holistic means that the entire person is engaged, including physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and even financial well-being. This makes Kundalini Yoga a practice that can transform all aspects of life.

Kundalini Yoga recognizes the Ten Bodies system and the chakra system, sharing deep roots with traditional yoga as practiced in the Western world. However, unlike many modern adaptations, this form of yoga was not altered to fit Western mentalities.

A class consists of a combination of pranayama (breathwork), kriya (a set sequence of exercises), mantra, and meditation.
This powerful combination activates the energy already within you, allowing it to be released and flow freely throughout your body.

A regular Kundalini class consists of:

  • Mantra is a core practice in Kundalini Yoga, using sound to shift energy and consciousness. The word mantra comes from Sanskrit: "Man" (mind) and "Tra" (wave or projection). When chanted, mantras stimulate meridian points in the mouth, activating the brain, balancing the nervous system, and aligning energy.

Most Kundalini Yoga mantras originate from Gurmukhi, with many from the Siri Guru Granth Sahib, though some are in Sanskrit or English. Each mantra carries a unique frequency, acting like a cosmic code that influences the mind and body.

Mantras can be chanted aloud, whispered, or recited mentally, each method offering a different effect. Over time, certain mantras become personal allies, supporting you through challenges, strengthening trust, and opening new possibilities.

Chanting is a universal practice—beyond language or belief, it connects us to something greater. It teaches us to love our own voice, trust our truth, and use sound as a tool for transformation.

  • Pranayama refers to an exercise that uses control of the breath, also known as breath work. In Kundalini Yoga, it is used to awaken energy, clear blockages, and connect with higher consciousness, promoting mental clarity and spiritual growth.

  • The word kriya comes from Sanskrit and means "complete action," "deed," or "effort." In Kundalini Yoga, a kriya is a specific set of yogic exercises designed to create a predictable effect on body, mind, and spirit. Each kriya follows a precise sequence of postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), mantras, eye focus, and energy locks (bandhas), working on all levels of being at once.

Kriyas serve different purposes—some support organ function, such as the liver or glandular system, while others enhance flexibility, balance emotions, or promote mental clarity. The effects are cumulative, meaning consistent practice deepens their impact over time.

In Kundalini Yoga, it is essential to practice a kriya exactly as it was passed down. Yogi Bhajan emphasized that these kriyas are sacred teachings, structured as complete and precise sets to preserve their intended effects. Because precision is crucial, Kundalini Yoga teachers often have a manual or a write up in front of them to ensure accuracy.

A kriya can be chosen to address specific needs, from improving sleep and spinal flexibility to relieving inner anger or enhancing radiant skin. By practicing a kriya with commitment, one initiates a sequence of physical, mental, and energetic transformations that lead to greater balance and awareness.

  • Meditation in Kundalini Yoga is a state of one-pointed focus. Even with movement, the practice stills the mind, helping to invoke the neutral mind, which supports better decision-making. Mantras can also be chanted during meditation, enhancing the practice. Kundalini meditations work to clear the subconscious, bringing clarity and inner peace.
